Used Tesla buying checklist (UK)

A calm list for viewing a used Model 3 or Model Y — not a valuation, and not a substitute for a professional inspection.

Independent fan site — not affiliated with Tesla, Inc. Prices move; confirm everything on Tesla UK / the seller’s paperwork.

Before you travel

  • Match the advert to the VIN / registration on GOV.UK vehicle check tools and any recall checker you use.
  • Ask for service history, accident history, number of keys, and whether Autopilot / FSD (Supervised) / Enhanced Autopilot was purchased (and whether it transfers — Tesla’s rules change; confirm in the app).
  • Note hardware generation if the seller knows it (important if you care about future supervised-driving features). UK FSD availability is still regulatory — see features explained.
  • Benchmark asking prices against this site’s used price snapshot and depreciation dataset (asking prices on the collection date, not sold prices).

At the car

  • Walk-around: panel gaps, paint, glass roof chips, wheel kerbing, charge-port fit.
  • Tyre brand, date codes and remaining tread — EV torque can wear tyres faster; budget replacements.
  • Cabin: seat wear, screen scratches, stalk/button condition (varies by build year).
  • On the touchscreen: software version, odometer, any alerts, camera calibration messages.
  • Battery: note estimated range at a stated percentage; a single screen is not a lab SoH test. For context on degradation studies (not a verdict on this car), read battery degradation.
  • Charge it if you can — AC at home or a public post — and listen for odd noises; try Autopilot only where legal and safe with the seller’s permission.
  • Sentry / Dashcam USB present? Mobile connector and any public-charge adapters included?

Paperwork & money

  • V5C name match, outstanding finance check, warranty months left (battery and drive-unit warranties are mileage/time limited — read Tesla’s current UK warranty PDF).
  • Insurance quote before you buy — see EV insurance snapshot for published averages, then get your own quote.
  • Running costs: calculator with your tariff. New vs used finance: PCP, HP, lease or cash.

New inventory prices for comparison: Teslas for sale.
