New to electric cars?
A calm UK starter guide: charging at home and on the road, range, costs, Superchargers, buying options and what depreciation actually looks like.
If you have never owned an electric car, the jargon can feel louder than the car. This page is a plain-English starter for UK drivers. It is not a sales pitch. tfanboy13 is an independent fan site and is not affiliated with Tesla, Inc.
How charging works
Think of two modes, not one:
- Home (AC). Most of your miles can come from a wallbox or a carefully used three-pin setup. You plug in when you get home; the car fills overnight. Your cost depends on your electricity tariff (pence per kWh), not the petrol forecourt.
- Public (AC or DC). Destination chargers are slower AC points at shops and hotels. DC rapid / ultra-rapid hubs (including Tesla Superchargers) put a lot of energy in during a break on a long trip. You pay per kWh or per session, and busy sites may add idle fees if you stay plugged in after you are done.
Useful words: AC charging, DC fast charge, CCS, kWh, home tariff. Full list: EV glossary.
Range without the panic
WLTP range on the sticker is a lab figure. Real-world miles are usually lower — cold weather, motorways and high speed all cut into it. That is normal, not a fault.
- Plan long trips around a coffee stop and a rapid charger, not around running the battery to empty.
- Cars can precondition the battery before a DC charge so it accepts power faster.
- Compare models on paper with EV compare, then be honest about your own motorway share.
What does a mile cost?
Energy cost per mile is roughly: price per kWh ÷ miles per kWh. On this site's running-cost defaults — an EV overnight off-peak example (EDF GoElectric 6.66p/kWh) and a Model Y RWD real-world efficiency from ev-database.org (3.9 mi/kWh) — home charging works out about 1.7p a mile for energy only. Tap the Ofgem average chip (26.32p/kWh) on the calculator if you are not on an EV tariff; that path is about 6.7p a mile. Public rapid charging costs more per kWh; petrol and diesel are higher still at the defaults we show.
Put in your tariff and mileage on the running-cost calculator (default 1,000 miles a month). Off-peak EV tariffs can be much cheaper than the average unit rate.
Superchargers in the UK
Tesla's DC network is dense on UK motorways and in many towns. Other brands can often use the same stalls (check your car and the Tesla app). We map the public Open Charge Map dump of UK Supercharger sites — stalls, listed power and addresses, not live occupancy.
Buying or leasing without the fog
Cash, PCP, hire purchase and a lease (PCH) behave differently at the end of the deal. Monthly headlines are not comparable unless the deposit, term, mileage and APR match.
- Short explainer: PCP, HP, lease or cash.
- Current UK Tesla trims, OTR cash prices and advertised finance callouts: Teslas for sale (always re-check tesla.com/en_gb before you order).
Depreciation — keep it honest
Electric cars lose value, like other cars. On this site's UK dataset of 3-year-old SUVs, a Model Y's loss looked about 43% — similar to an Audi Q5 petrol in that sample — while some petrol SUVs (for example RAV4, X3, GLC, XC60) held value better. That is not “Tesla beats petrol”; it is “compare like with like”.
Read the depreciation data and how to compare depreciation fairly.
Software, assistance and headlines
Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) are driver-assistance features: you stay responsible. They are not the same as a driverless robotaxi. When a headline says “recall”, check whether the remedy is a garage visit or an overnight software update — see what a recall actually means and FSD vs driverless.
If you enjoy testing how headlines frame a story, try the short quiz Bias bingo, or the routine in How to check a news story yourself.
A simple first-week checklist
- Learn one home charging routine and one public backup (app + payment method).
- Note your real mi/kWh after a week of mixed driving.
- Run the cost calculator with that figure and your tariff.
- Bookmark Superchargers and the glossary before a long trip.
