Service & consumables — EV vs petrol
What usually costs less, what may not, and where we refuse to invent a yearly £ figure.
Typically lower on an EV
- Oil changes — none on a battery EV.
- Brake wear — regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so pads/discs often last longer. How much longer depends on driving style; we do not invent a % saving.
- Exhaust / timing belt / spark plugs — not applicable.
Still budget for these
- Tyres — EVs are heavy and have instant torque; many owners report faster tyre wear than a light petrol hatch. Cost is brand, size and driving style — get quotes for your exact size rather than trusting a viral average.
- Cabin filter / HEPA-style filters — replaced on a schedule in the manual.
- Wiper blades, 12V battery (where fitted), air-con service — still real.
- Brake fluid — still needs periodic changes even if pads last longer.
Tesla scheduled service
Tesla’s UK service intervals and prices are published in the app / support pages and change over time. We do not mirror a price list here that would go stale — check Tesla UK Support for your model year.
Optional cost pad (your numbers)
Use the optional insurance / servicing / VED fields on the running-cost calculator to add your yearly quotes beside energy costs.
Sources & limits
- General EV maintenance pattern is industry consensus (no oil; regen reduces brake wear). We deliberately avoid fake “£X/year typical” tables without a named UK survey.
- For energy cost vs petrol, use sourced defaults on /data/running-costs/.
- Tyre and brake quotes: local fitters or your insurer’s approved network.
