Second-life batteries & recycling
What happens when an EV pack is no longer ideal for the road โ in plain UK English, without invented recycling rates.
First life โ second life โ recycling
- Vehicle use โ the pack powers the car under warranty rules and real-world degradation (degradation explainer).
- Second life โ modules that still hold useful capacity can be redeployed in stationary storage (homes, grid, commercial), where weight and volume matter less than in a car.
- Recycling โ at end of life, specialists recover materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper. Chemistry matters: LFP packs use different economics to nickel-rich NMC.
Rules of the road (high level)
The EU Battery Regulation and UK policy direction push producer responsibility, labelling and recycled-content targets over the coming years. Exact percentages and dates belong on official pages โ start with GOV.UK / Environment Agency guidance on batteries waste and the EU regulation text if you need legal detail. We will not invent a UK recycling-rate headline.
What drivers can do
- Do not dump packs; dealers and authorised waste carriers handle high-voltage batteries.
- When selling, leave the 12V and HV systems to professionals.
- Longer first life (sensible charging habits) delays the need for second-life or recycling โ see degradation page.
